At a usual working day, I was interacting with one of the investors from Chennai who was interested to own a franchise of a food and beverage brand. In a very bewildered tone, he said “I have a very small area of 180 sq.ft. Is it possible that I can own a food and beverage franchise?” Many investors feel that they cannot reap benefits if they open any outlet/centre at smaller place. But this is not true. We recommend them to open a kiosk model.

Kiosk is a small standalone structure. Earlier, Kiosks were opened in street markets. Due to change in marketing pattern and structures, kiosks can now be found in high streets, shopping complexes, colleges, airports and mall as well. In food & beverage category, the kiosks were dominated by India food, later kiosks started coming up with western food like sandwiches, burgers, wraps, rolls, ice creams etc. According to business standard, the organised food kiosk market was 800 crore in 2012. More brands are opting for kiosk model now.

One of the major advantage of opting for kiosk is lower operational cost which reduces lot of errands which leads to overall reduction in investment.  One can save expenses incurred in interiors and exteriors, kitchen equipment’s as well. The consumption of electricity also gets lessened. Kiosk requires lesser manpower. Even a one or two people can manage a food kiosk very easily. A food kiosk is a very consistent way of generating revenue where people usually come for shopping etc. or the footfall is high

One major point, which needs to addressed carefully is  the adherence to the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).  If the SOPs are not being followed properly, it would impact the quality of the overall food & the kiosk can suffer from losses. At the bigger picture, it would hamper the brand’s equity in the market.

Not only food, many brands like US Dollar store, Photoexpress etc. offer franchise opportunities in Kiosk Model.  Owning a franchise in Kiosk Model is very beneficial for those who own small space and want to reap huge benefits out of it.
