Birla Edutech to Establish 50 Schools in Next Three Years; Seeks Franchise Partnership for Expansion

Birla Edutech Limited, a Yash Birla Group Company, plans to open 50 schools in the next three years and is also eyeing higher education area, said a top official of the company on Saturday.

“We are planning to open 50 school in the next three years of which 10 schools will be owned by us and the rest will be opened through franchise partners,” said Yash Birla Group director Vedant Birla during the launch of its school, ‘Open Minds,’ in Hyderabad. The school has been built in association with DSR Educational Society, an educational arm of Hyderabad-based DSR Group.

Birla Edutech Limited has three main educational initiatives namely Shloka, Open Minds and Globe Tot’ers. While Shloka and Open Minds are meant for students at the primary and higher secondary level, Globe Tot’ers is a preschool.

“Of the 50 schools we are planning to launch in the next three years, 10 will be Open Minds and the rest will be Shloka,” Birla Edutech chief executive officer Vijay Mishra said.

Mishra explained that Open Minds caters to metros while Shlokas are meant for tier 2 and tier 3 cities in the country.

He said, if one sets aside the cost of land, it takes an investment of around Rs 35-50 crore to set up an Open Minds school while Shloka requires Rs 20-30 crore.

The company has 15 schools in the country and is also planning to set up schools in foreign locations.

“We have got queries from Malaysia and Singapore but there are no concrete plans as such. It is at a very initial stage,” Birla said.

Talking about the future plans, he said, “We also plan to enter the higher education area. We have plans to open 15-16 super speciality colleges but that is at an ideation stage and we hope to begin work in that front in the next one-to-two years.”
